Am I the right candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is rapidly becoming one of our most requested procedures.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 230,000 people had liposuction performed in 1999, up 34 percent from the previous year.

Liposuction removes unwanted fat from the thighs, hips, stomach or other body areas using suction from a vacuum pump.  Liposuction may not take off pounds, but it can take off inches by improving the body shape.  The ideal candidate for liposuction is of a fairly normal weight with stubborn areas of excess fat also known as love handles and saddlebags. These problem areas seem to be resistant to our best efforts of diet and exercise but respond well to liposuction.

People with a chronic health condition or sagging skin or who are overweight usually are not good candidates for liposuction.

How can I be sure the plastic surgeon I choose is qualified to perform my surgery?

As is the case with all surgical procedures, make sure your plastic surgeon is fully trained and certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  You can also check to see if he has operating privileges at accredited hospitals in your area.  Even when surgical procedures are not performed in a hospital setting, having a surgeon with privileges at local hospitals is important because it means that the physician has passed a thorough peer review of surgical competency and qualifications.

No.  Plastic surgery takes in commonly known procedures such as facelifts and breast augmentation, but also includes other procedures such as removal of skin cancers, breast cancer reconstruction and facial reconstruction from such things as automobile accidents or dog bites.

Breast augmentation - saline or gel?

Certainly one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures is breast augmentation or enlargement that enhances the size and shape of the breasts.  Several styles are available as well as saline or silicone gel implants.  In the 1990’s, saline-filled implants completely replaced the formerly popular gel-filled implants because of the 1992 FDA moratorium on the use of silicone gel.  However, because of recent studies, silicone is once again available in certain circumstances.  Discuss with your physician the difference between saline and silicone gel and decide what might be best for you.
